There were 3 APHS faculties and 5 national faculties from China for this program who provided training to 32 candidates. The course was conducted at a brand new facility for animal training and research in Beijing. There were 8 tables and animal live tissue workshop was performed on hernia repair.
There were 31 candidates and Faculty included Dr Rolf Hartung, Dr Cheng Chung Tsai, Dr Sardar Nayeem, Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Chen Jie, Dr Tang, Dr Li, Dr Zhen Ling Ji, Dr Liu , Dr Chang Fu Qin.
The Hernia Essentials Basics and Practicals course was held on February 22 and 23, 2019 at Gading Pluit Hospital, Jakarta and February 24, 2019 at Faculty of Veterenary Medicine Bogor Agricultural University, Bogir, Indonesia.
There were 29 candidates and 8 faculties including Dr Rajesh Khullar, Dr Manish Baijal, Dr Chen Jie, Dr Barlian Sutedja (also the organizer) and other regional faculties from Indonesia.
There was live surgery demonstration on day one from New Delhi,China and Singapore which was relayed at Gading Pluit Hospital, Jakarta.
An MCQ assessment was done at the end of the program and Dr Barlian announced that the top scorer would be rewarded with complementary registration for the upcoming annual APHS congress 2019 at Bali. The winner was announced for the same, Dr I Komang Werdhi Artha.
Under the theme Hernia Tailor Made APHS 2018 has been a very successful annual APHS event organized in Dubai, UAE in collaboration with GCC Hernia Society with one day of pre-congress workshops and three days packed with scientific program in 4 halls taking place from 28th of November to 1st of December 2018. The congress was endorsed by 7 international societies. The main venue, the Raffles Hotel Dubai has been a fantastic location with luxurious congress facilities and accommodation for the invited faculty and guest speakers. The three workshops were conducted at three different locations: Hernia Essential Basic Workshop in Raffles Hotel, Medical Writing and Publishing in Mohammed Bin Rashid University in Dubai Healthcare City, and Animal Hands-on Workshop in Surgical Institute of University of Sharjah. The respective lectures in workshops were 15 lectures in Hernia Essentials presented by 10 speakers with an attendance of 32 participants, 12 lectures in the Medical Writing and Publishing workshop with 4 international speakers (editors) for an attendance of 28 participants , and 7 lectures in the animal hands on workshop with 4 international and one local instructors for 6 candidates at three operation tables performing TEP, TAPP, IPOM and PPOM.
The congress offered 310 presentations given by 206 speakers from 33 countries. All 13 ExCo members of APHS and 90% of the executive chapter members attended the conference including 5 founding members. 68 invited international faculty guests and 35 eminent speakers from GCC delivered high quality lectures on all topics related to hernia. The total number of participants including workshops was 623 with 78 registrations of companies. During the congress there was live transmission from Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital, Capital Medical University Beijing China and NMC DIP Hospital Dubai. Video presentations and poster exhibition (26) completed the spectrum of scientific presentations. For the first time Hernia Essentials Convocation Ceremony was conducted by the entire APHS Executive Committee and the present founding members with the award of the HE certificate of fellowship in hernia surgery to 21 candidates. During the congress the ExCo meeting and Annual General Meeting were conducted by both societies APHS and GCC Hernia Society.
The social program included the invited faculty dinner in Nassem Hotel on 28th of November with the iconic Burj Al Arab en face, and the Gala Dinner in Creek Club Dubai with award ceremonies for 10 eminent APHS members to the hall of fame of APHS and 5 senior local surgeons who have contributed to the development and advancement of surgery in the UAE. The entertainment during the Gala Dinner included Ayala Dance, Belly Dance, Dabka Folk Dance, Abaya and Kandora, Henna painting, and the July Duo for the music entertainment presenting the APHS Hernia Song.
Many participants stayed back until last minute to attend the closing ceremony on 1st Of December at 6pm.
The Hernia Essentials Basics Program at Dubai was held on 28th November, 2018. The course had a total of 35 candidates and 11 faculties. 6 faculties were from the APHS and 5 from the Local organizing country- UAE. The Hernia Essentials Training program was a part of the pre congress training courses at the annual 2018 APHS congress.
The first convocation of HE Training training program was held on 30th November, 2018 during the annual APHS dubai congress. The convocation was a solemn and dignified ceremony that was attended by the entire Executive committee with trustees. A total of 21 candidates were awarded the 'Diploma in Hernia Essentials'
The ceremony was conducted by the Secretary General of APHS- Dr Rajesh Khullar. The Scientific chair and Course Director of the Hernia Essentials program - Dr Anil Sharma presented a brief account of the journey of the Hernia essentials training program. This was the first convocation and the President of APHS Dr Jose Macario Faylona read out the pledge along with the participants and admitted them to the Diploma in Hernia Essentials program of APHS.
The Hernia Essentials Basics Program was held in Jakarta on June 30th, 2018. There were 160 participants and 6 faculties both from APHS and the local Indonesian hernia society chapter. As a trial run, there were 2 operations that were transmitted live from Beijing Chao Yang Hospital to Jakarta. The Hernia Essentials Basics course was followed by Practical training on entertainers with animal workshop the next day.
The Hernia Essentials Practical Training Program was held at Beijing Chao Yang Hospital of the Capital Medical University on 17th - 18th May 2018.
The program director was Prof. Chen Jie and the training program was hosted by the Department of the Hernia and Abdominal Surgery, Beijing Chao Yang Hospital
(Center of Excellence for Minimal Access Surgery Training) The HE Practicals comprised of three components- Live surgery, hernia endotraining exercises and porceen cadaver workshop. The course faculty included Dr Pradeep Chowbey, Dr Davide Lomanto, Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Chen Jie, Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar, Dr Ramesh Punjani, Dr Sameer Rege, Dr Avinash Katara. There were 21 participants from 3 countries and the participant to faculty ratio was 2:1 on each operating table.
There were surgical videos on complication of groin and ventral incisional hernia. Live surgery demonstrations were telecast from Max Hospital Delhi to CEMAST, Mumbai.
With around 150 participants from 4 countries , Hernia Essentials Basics program at Dharan was a successful event which cultivated new initiatives and consensus.
In this workshop (on day 1), live demonstration of laparoscopic inguinal and ventral hernia repair was done. On day 2, we have 10 scientific sessions by keynote speakers, 2 joint sessions as panel discussion including all the faculties and one hernia quiz for junior/senior residents and junior faculties was conducted
The 8th Hernia Essentials program was held on 9th December 2017 at the Gateway Hotel, Mangalore, Karnataka.The event was organised by Department of Surgery, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore and the organizing chairman was Prof Harish Rao. The Hernia Essentials Basics Course is now accredited and endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. The event was attended by around 110 surgeons comprising of Post Graduates, Residents, Fellows and Consultants. The eminent faculties for this program were Dr Pradeep Chowbey, Dr Jose Macario Faylona, Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Jaideepraj Rao, Dr Alfred Augustine, Dr PK Reddy and Dr Ramesh Punjani.
The APHS Hernia Essentials Basics Course was held at Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, Dhaka on the 25th of November 2017 in association with the Hernia Society of Bangladesh. The program had 130 participants and 7 faculties. The international faculty were Dr. Rajesh Khullar and Dr. DeeprajBhandarkar. The national faculty were Prof. Motior Rahman, Prof. Sarder A. Nayeem (course convenor), Prof. AHM Shamsul Alam, Prof. AHM Towhidul Alam and Prof. ABM Khurshid Alam. The audience included a mix of faculty, fellows and surgical post graduate students. The program concluded with an MCQ assessment on hernia. A Live Workshop was held the following day conducted by the Hernia Society of Bangladesh. 4 cases were demonstrated; comprising of TEP, TAPP and ventral hernia repair. The surgeries were demonstrated by Dr. Samiron Kumar Mondal, Dr. ABM Mahbubur Rahman and Dr. Manir Hossain Khan.
The Hernia conference at Abu Dhabi was a two day event at Dusit Tani, Abudhabi on 27- 28 October 2017. On day one, live telecast of surgery was done from Max Hospital, Delhi to the NMC Royal Hospital in Abu Dhabi. The procedures demonstarted were TEP, Ventral hernia repair, Anterior component seperation for complex incisional hernia. The faculty included leading hernia experts Dr Pradeep Chowbey, Dr Davide Lomanto, Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Tim Tollens and Dr Rolf Hartung. The local faculties included Dr Anant Pai, Dr Katrak Merzeben, Dr Ahd Marzouk
There were about 80 participants in the course. The program marked commencement of educational activity of APHS building upto the 14th annual congress of APHS in November 2018 at Dubai.
The fifth Hernia essentials program was held at National Cancer Institute, Putrajaya, Malysia on 25th August , 2017. The program had 50 participants and 7 faculties. Three faculties were from APHS i..e. Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Allen Alfred Buenafe and Dr George Yang. The four local faculties from Malaysia were Dr Ramesh, Dr Guna, Dr Vimal and Dr Yeap Chee Loong. Two live surgeries were demonstarted during the program : TEP was demonstrated by Dr Alfred Allen Buenafe and TAPP was demonstrated by Dr George Yang. This was followed by a MCQ assessment.
The Hernia Essentials Course was held in Beijing in conjunction with Chinese Hernia College of Surgeons (CHCS) on 3rd August 2017. APHS Training Faculty were Dr Alfred Allen Buenafe from Manilla, Dr C Tsai from Taiwan and Dr Anil Sharma from India. The local Faculty from China were Prof Chen Jie, Dr Ji, Prof Steven Yao, The course was conducted at Beijing Chao Yang Hospital and hosted by Prof Chen Jie, Director of Hernia Division Beijing Chao Yang Hospital. The program also involved Live Telecast of several Groin and Abdominal Wall Hernia Repairs.
An APHS consultative group meeting was held in Bangkok on 5th July 2017 to discuss and deliberate upon the Hernia essentials program. It was decided to establish the next step in the Hernia essentials training program. The next level in the Hernia essentials training program would be tentatively titled 'Diploma- Hernia Essentials'. This training would comprise three components viz Live surgical workshop, endotraining and cadaver labs. The planned structure for this course would be LIVE surgical workshop and endotraining on day one and cadaver labs on day 2. The requirements and eligibility criteria for 'Diploma - Hernia essentials' are being worked out.
The third hernia essentials program was conducted at University Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam on 21-22 April 2017. This was the largest program conducted so far with 150 registered delegates.
The audience comprised a mix of faculty , residents, fellows and surgical post graduates. Some presentation slides were translated to Vietnamese for ease of understanding. The program concluded with an MCQ assessment on hernia.
A live operative workshop was conducted on 22nd April wherein TEP and Ventral hernia repair were demonstrated.
The second hernia Essentials training course was held at Manila, Philippines on 11th March. The local course convener was Dr Alfred Allen Beunafe. The course was held at the Philippines Center of Advanced Surgery (PCAS). Dr Anil Sharma represented the central APHS faculty and national faculty from Phillipenes were Dr Alfred Allen Beunafe, Dr Macky Faylona, Dr Henry Chua, Dr Raymund. The course participants numbered 87. An assessment test (MCQ’s) was conducted at the end of the training course.
The first hernia essentials training course of the APHS was held on 22nd February at Shanghai, China. All past presidents of APHS were present to contribute and make suggestions for the first educational initiative of APHS. Course faculty from China included Prof Steven Yao, Prof Tang & Prof Ma. The course was attended by about 70 delegates and the presentations were translated into Chinese.
