I am deeply honored and priviledged being elected as your president for the year 2018-2019. My predecessors have already paved they way for the creation of this great society whose main aim is to promote, educate and improve hernia surgery in the Asia Pacific region.
With this mandate, the executive committee and our society’s board of directors will work tirelessly in the advancement of hernia surgery in our region. Professor Chowbey as our founding president started a revolution in hernia surgery in the region and each succeeding president: President Davide Lomanto, President Barlian Sutedja, President Sathien Tumtavitikul, and President Anil Sharma steered our society to what is it today.
More and more National Chapters of APHS are being formed further increasing our brotherhood in the Asia Pacific region. We will further empower our national chapters to be active in terms of training, research and education. Our chapters and our membership is our source of inspiration for your board and officers to work hard for the betterment of our society.
We will continue to collaborate with other hernia societies in the world in order to foster brotherhood and camaraderie between our societies, which will foster further learning, and education to all our members.
The Hernia Essentials (HE) training program established by Prof. Anil Sharma will continue to educate our young surgeons. The training course involves a comprehensive (open and laparoscopy, groin and ventral/ incisional) and structured program based on current international guidelines on hernia management (EHS, APHS, SAGES, IEHS and HerniaSurge guidelines) The Hernia essentials program now evolved in to a basic and advanced component which will seek standardization of hernia training in the Asia Pacific region. We will also look into and study the different residency training programs in the region and see if APHS can also offer a standardized training for residents and trainees.
We are pleased that our industry partners continually support us in our educational undertaking and we recognize and appreciate their invaluable contribution to our endeavor to further expand our horizons in surgical training and education. Your executive committee and your board will continually work for excellence in hernia surgery in the Asia Pacific region.
